Can you bring your own catnip to give to the cats at a cat cafe?

Question: Can you bring your own catnip to give to the cats at a cat cafe?

No, you cannot bring your own catnip to a cat cafe. Nearly every venue strictly bans outside catnip, treats, and food. While your intentions are generous, introducing external stimulants creates real safety and health risks for the resident cats.

Why Outside Catnip Is Prohibited

Cat cafes house multiple felines in a shared communal space. Catnip triggers an intense, euphoric response via the natural compound nepetalactone. In a group environment, this burst of energy can quickly escalate into territorial aggression, overstimulation, and accidental fights.

Staff members also carefully track each animal's medical needs and daily diet. Outside herbs can cause sudden stomach upset, trigger allergies, or conflict with a cat's prescription meal plan. Bringing in outside items also risks tracking in foreign bacteria or pests from other animals.

How to Safely Bond with Cafe Cats

You do not need personal catnip to win over the resident felines. Stick to these visitor best practices instead:

• Purchase cafe-approved snacks: Buy vetted treats directly from the counter. These are safe for the cats and help support the rescue.
• Use provided toys: Interact with the sanitized feather wands and balls provided by the venue to prevent cross-contamination.
• Offer calm affection: Let shy cats approach you first. Offer soft chin scratches, quiet companionship, and slow blinks.

Following these simple house rules keeps the lounge calm and injury-free for everyone. Relax, enjoy your visit, and let the cats bond with you on their own terms.
