Do cat cafes conduct background checks or landlord permission checks for cat adoptions?

Question: Do cat cafes conduct background checks or landlord permission checks for cat adoptions?

Yes, almost all cat cafes require landlord permission checks and standard background screening before you can adopt. While the cafe hosts the cats, partner animal rescues handle the legal adoption process. These rescues enforce strict screening protocols to ensure every cat moves into a safe, permanent home.

Why Rescues Verify Your Living Situation

Cat cafes partner with licensed rescues that serve as the legal guardians of the animals. Before approving an application, rescue coordinators contact your landlord or review your lease to verify pet allowances, pet deposits, and animal limits.

Coordinators may also check veterinary references for your current pets and consult public animal control records for past neglect or cruelty citations. These checks protect you from lease violations, expensive fines, and the heartbreak of having to surrender a pet later.

How to Prepare for the Screening Process

• Have Your Lease Ready: Keep a copy of your signed pet addendum or an approval email from your property manager ready to submit.
• Alert Your References: Tell your landlord, personal references, and current veterinarian to expect a quick call from the rescue.
• Verify Building Limits: Check your building's rules on maximum pet counts and pet fees before you visit the cafe.

Do not let the screening process intimidate you. Rescues simply want to keep cats safe, and upfront communication will help you bring your new cat home quickly.
