Question: What are the standard home environment requirements to adopt a cat from a cat cafe?

To adopt a cat from a cat cafe, your home must meet safety standards set by the cafe's partner rescue. Most organizations require a secure indoor space, written landlord approval if you rent, and a designated quiet area for initial decompression.

The Adjustment Process

Cafe cats spend their days around rotating visitors and other felines. Moving into a private residence brings unfamiliar smells and sudden routine changes, which can overwhelm even confident animals. Rescues look for homes that minimize early stress and eliminate common hazards. They will also verify that your current pets are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and comfortable around cats. Ensuring your space is secure prevents accidental escapes and injuries during this sensitive transition period.

Essential Home Requirements

• A Dedicated Safe Room: Prepare a quiet, closed-off room with food, water, a litter box, and hiding spots where your cat can decompress for the first week or two.
• Pet-Proofed Safety: Secure all window screens, tuck away electrical cords, and remove toxic houseplants like lilies, philodendrons, and pothos.
• Landlord Approval: If you rent, provide lease documentation or a written statement confirming pet allowances and paid pet deposits.
• Household Agreement: Ensure all family members or roommates agree to the adoption and understand basic cat body language.

Preparing your living space ahead of time reassures the rescue coordinator that you are ready for a smooth adoption. Always talk directly with cafe staff about your chosen cat's specific personality and behavioral history before adoption day.
