How do rescue cat cafes in Netherlands support local shelters?

These cafes function as socialized foster homes. By housing cats in a cage-free lounge, they free up valuable space at traditional shelters, reduce feline stress, and help cats develop social skills, making them more adoptable.

What is the adoption process like at a cat cafe in Netherlands?

Typically, you fill out an application form from the partner shelter, complete a screening or interview, and pay an adoption fee that goes entirely to the rescue group.

What should you do if a cat scratches or bites you during your cat cafe visit?

If a minor scratch or nip occurs in a Netherlands cat cafe, notify a staff member immediately. They will clean and sanitize the area with first-aid supplies and check on the feline to ensure everyone remains safe.

Is there a private back room where cafe cats can hide from customers if they feel overwhelmed?

Yes. Responsible cat cafes in Netherlands provide cat-only retreat rooms accessible via cat doors. If a cat feels tired or overwhelmed, they can retreat to rest away from human visitors.

Is there a specific dress code or clothing recommendation for visiting a cat cafe?

We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing made of durable fabrics. Avoid delicate items like lace or silk that might catch cat claws. In many Netherlands cat cafes, guests are also required to wear socks inside the lounge.

Can you visit a cat cafe just to buy coffee without paying to enter the cat lounge?

Yes! Many of the 1 active listings in Netherlands operate a separate cafe or counter area where you can buy coffee, drinks, and pastries without paying an entry fee for the cat lounge. Glass windows often allow you to view the cats while enjoying your drinks.

Can you host a children’s birthday party at a cat cafe?

Yes, many family-friendly cat cafes in Netherlands offer private party packages for children's birthdays, providing exclusive lounge access, guided cat interactions, and party space.

Are you allowed to pick up and hold the cats while visiting a cat cafe?

To protect the well-being of the rescue animals, most cat cafes in Netherlands do not allow visitors to forcibly pick up or carry the cats. However, cats are free to climb onto your lap if they feel comfortable!

How long does the cat adoption approval process typically take through a cat cafe?

The adoption application process through a cat cafe in Netherlands generally takes between 1 and 5 business days, depending on shelter screening, reference checks, and landlord approvals.

Can you purchase gift cards or digital vouchers for a cat cafe visit?

Yes, almost all cat cafes in Netherlands offer physical gift cards or digital e-vouchers. They make wonderful gifts for animal lovers and can usually be purchased directly through the cafe's website.

What are the average startup costs required to open a new cat cafe?

Opening a cat cafe in Netherlands typically requires startup capital ranging between $100,000 and $300,000, covering leasehold improvements, double-door entries, ventilation, and permits.

Is it okay to gently pet sleeping cats while visiting a cat cafe?

It is best practice not to disturb sleeping cats. While a very gentle pet on the back may be fine, waking sleeping felines can cause stress or startle them. Allowing cats to rest ensures a safe and peaceful environment.
